Symptoms of Parkinson’s disease vary from person to person and change over time. But a Parkinson’s diagnosis will only be considered when two of the four main motor symptoms are present over a period of time.

The four main motor symptoms of Parkinson’s disease are:

Slowness of movement, also called bradykinesia. This symptom makes it harder to initiate and perform physical actions such as getting out of bed, buttoning a shirt or even speech.

Involuntary shaking, or tremor at rest. Tremor… read more

I put small flashlights from the dollar store on every doorknob so that I always know where to look for one. I started doing that when I cared for my mother who had Alzheimer's and have continued the practice. Her bedroom had one on each side of the door - One for her to feel safe and the other for me to grab if needed and to increase the chances that she would not have hidden all of them! I also have small LED nightlights. (except for my bedroom as I hate the excess light. Sleep is elusive enough as it is!) They do give off enough light for me to get my bearings if I wake up confused about my surroundings however.

@A MyParkinsonsTeam Member, I have two words for you-----GRAB BARS. You don't even have to have them installed by anyone. There are some excellent suction grab bars sold at home improvement stores, as well as drug stores and home medical stores. Also, if you shower floor is slippery, get those skid proof sticky things for the floor. I keep thinking of those bright flowers that people use. Also, a shower seat will help.

Hi Denise, I have freezing whenever I stand up from a chair or bed. For me it's like my brain is assessing if there are equal parts of weight in my legs before I take a step and it lasts for about 10 seconds. Taking that first step is scary (like my brain is taking a gamble). After quite a few falls last year, now I ALWAYS hang onto something sturdy with one hand while taking the first step--a table, chair, etc.

Keep smiling!

Very good---seems to have hit most of it very well! There are also good descriptions on Michael J Fox's website and the Parkinson's foundation

I find Tai Chi helps with balance and flexibility as well as co-ordination.
