Mainly Nausea And Insomnia...Insomnia Now Solved...Nausea A Lot But Controllable And Worth It
A MyParkinsonsTeam Member asked a question 💭

I do not sleep well. I fall asleep forty- five mins and wake up and lay awake. I fall back to sleep after a period of time and wake up every hour or two. Could my meds be a factor? I'm on sinemet, requip, azilect, and comtan. I use good bedtime hygene. Any suggestions, thoughts?

I'm a huge proponent of strategic light therapy in Parkinson's Disease - I have been using this for some time and has had improved my quality of life enormously. I am currently writing up my experiences on my "Out-Thinking Parkinson's" blog. The most major benefit is very much improved sleep as well removing the need to take PD meds at night, which disrupt the Circadian Rhythm and wreak havoc on hormonal balances. Here is a very recent scientific publication on good outcomes of light therapy for improving sleep in people with PD http://jamanetwork.com/journals/jamaneurology/f...

I also take Azilect, but I didn't have these problems until a couple years after I started it. Both of these things have developed fairly recently for me. I've found that if I eat a little something, like a banana, before taking my meds, I don't feel the nausea as often. As for sleep, it's exactly as you've described. I'll get a few hours to begin and then I'm up every 45 minutes or so. I'm going to start trying some herbal teas to see if that helps before bed.

"This week, in a randomized controlled trial, light therapy continued to show its potential in the treatment of Parkinson’s Disease. Parkinson’s, one of the most common neurological disorders, is a progressive movement disease characterized by tremor, rigidity, stooped posture, and difficulty walking. Often, impairments in sleep and alertness accompany the disorder.

Bright light therapy was significantly associated with several improvements in the sleep/wake cycle, including a reduction in excessive daytime sleepiness. Other noteworthy benefits in the group receiving bright light therapy (vs the controlled light condition) include fewer overnight awakenings, better sleep quality, and greater ease in falling asleep.

In addition, average physical activity, as measured objectively, increased."
