My Father passed away late 2014 from a very aggressive form of Parkinson's, which led to other complications and eventually pneumonia. My Mother has it too. They were both diagnosed somewhere around 2010 though I can't be sure of exact dates, and have no contact with my Mother.
I have no idea what medications my Mother is on, she lives in France, and as above, I have no contact with her.
As I'm worried it may be hereditary, what symptoms might I look for in myself?
The short answer is no. Although about 10 per cent of people with Parkinson’s disease will have a relative who is also affected, the vast majority do not. You should not worry about having passed the disease on to your children. Like many other diseases, Parkinson’s disease is likely to be the result of a complex interaction between both genetic and environmental factors.
The four key symptoms are tremor, slowness of movement, muscle rigidity and instability. However, the nature and severity of symptoms can vary considerably from one individual to another. In the early stages of the disease, symptoms may be vague and non-specific, such as fatigue or muscle pain.
Your family doctor may order some tests to exclude other possible causes of your symptoms. However, there is no definitive test for Parkinson’s disease. A diagnosis of Parkinson’s disease relies very much on the symptoms. It is possible you may have to wait for symptoms to develop further to confirm the diagnosis
I don't think it's hereditary. I was diagnosed 10 years ago at age 50, yet NONE of my family members (mother, father, aunts, uncles, grandparents, etc.) have ever shown signs of the disease. Environmental, maybe. Hereditary, I doubt it. (just my humble opinion)
It's definitely hereditary and environmental . One of the symptom are that you can develop hand and leg tremors .
Thank you for the info. I get tremors anyway, as I have an alcohol problem. I am aged 50, what checks would you recommend my GP take?
