How Do I Tell My Neuro I Want To See A Movement Disorder Specialist Without Offending Him?
A MyParkinsonsTeam Member asked a question 💭

I really like my neuro but don't think he is current on latest treatments & studies. New doc requires a referral from him & faxed records before setting up an appt. I don't want to offend current doc. Suggestions?

I would not worry about offending my doctor. Do what is best for you!

sorry I hit the wrong button as usual! Your doctor should not be bothered by you getting a second opinion---I am certain that he has given second Opinions to other patients himself! A movement disorder doctor has special training. I understand your feelings but when it comes to something this serious it is ok to put yourself first!

I think I must be the queen of neurologist changers, as I am now working with my 5th doctor. To be honest, I only initiated the change with 2 of them. One because he said he had never had a Parkinson's patient (and I didn't want to be his guinea pig)! The other was personality and quality of doctor visits. The others took jobs too far away from me.

Any doctor who truly wants the best for his/her patient, will gladly give you the referral you need. Tell him how much you have valued his time working with you. however, you decided that a movement disorder specialist best fits your needs right now.

Good luck and remember, your neurologist will be working closely with you for most of your life, so you owe it to yourself to find the best "fit".

Any neurologist that is good will understand and not be threatened by this. Just tell them that you would like a referral.

CarolB I had the same dilemna recently However I did not need a referral I had 2 Appts with the movement specialist before I saw my neuro again. Each time the specialist spent over an hour with me and put me on sinimet. When I saw my neuro again he said it it was not important who I saw as long as I felt I was getting the best care
