Do You Have Tips For Getting Up From A Chair Or A Couch ?
A MyParkinsonsTeam Member asked a question 💭

Getting up from a chair/ couch is one of my biggest PD difficulty. My lower body is locked, contracted and stiff.I'm unable to move to a standing position. Maybe I should consider buying an adaptive aid like a handle to help me to get up.

@A MyParkinsonsTeam Member. Hi. This may sound silly but commode plungers are a lot less costly than canes...even with Medicare. Go to a Home Depot place and pick up a couple of identical plungers. The rubber the plunger is made from will slide much less than a cane. You can use them when getting out of the car and just toss them back in the car after you get out and/ or up. They are like little ski poles. How stable are you after you come up off the seat? No need to say "be careful". My best, Sterling

@A MyParkinsonsTeam Member My husband was having difficulty and we got him an electric Lazy-Boy. So far that is sufficient! He also has a bed helper and a safety bar in the shower.

3 tips for getting out of a chair can be found online. They work for me. I also have 4 grab bars in my home. They help me get up and/or maintain my balance when I'm standing. ((((hugs))))

The electric lounge chair is a wonderful chair. My husband even sleeps in one so he can get up at night without waking me up.

Couches are the hardest to get out of. We put upside down plastic flowerpots under our couch to help raise it, and that helps a lot. Sitting in chairs it seems best to have arms on it. One big thing we do is that once you do make it to your feet, you need to just stand there to get your balance and prepare for the moving part which comes next. We call that time period ... getting to know you a bit better cause you just have to stand and talk to whomever you are with (if that's the case anyway!) Good luck and don't get discouraged, it may not get better, but you WILL find ways to adapt. Just takes some time at times. Be patient with yourself. God BLess
