A MyParkinsonsTeam Member asked a question 💭

I have consulted a nutritionist.I wanted to know her opinion regarding PD and diet.Since my YOPD Dx in 2011, I became more health conscious and I have done a lot of reading on the subject.I have changed my diet.It had tremendous benefits on my wellbeing.I eat a plant based diet : nuts, fruits & vegetables, grains , beans.....I know that it's important to eat fiber to prevent constipation.I learned that protein can interfere with the effectiveness of the prescription drugs.Maybe I should take my… read more

Same with @A MyParkinsonsTeam Member I walk do exercise in my bedroom. I wish I had the money to hire a personal trainer that understands Parkinson's and help me. We don't have anyone out here like that at least with the right qualifications.

I never consulted a nutritionist but I do my own homework via the internet. Diet and exercise are crucial to slow down and control the disease.

My doctor told me on my original visit, not to eat anything 30 minutes before an 30 minutes taking my Carb/Levo.as the food would wrap around the med & it would be ineffective. Also if you're taking this med.I read in the paperwork you get from the pharmacy that you shouldn't take anything with iron an hour either way if you are taking this med.as effects the results. If you are like me 99% of the time I don't read these things.Later that day I made mention of reading this to my home health nurse. She looked it up & stated OMG. I should have caught that.Said most of her PD PATIENTS were on this med. This goes to show that even a person in the medical profession can't keep up with every thing. We have to help take care of our health

Hi @A MyParkinsonsTeam Member! Actually I did contact a dietician just recently. For me its all about putting weight on and keeping it on. I've had trouble with it all my life. I can lose 5 pounds in a day if I don't feel well (like a flu) but then it can take 6 months to put it back on!! Well, now with my tremor dominant PD, my basal calorie burn (how many calories do I naturally burn in a day just from my metabolism, exercise and tremor) shows that I burn around 2,500 calories every single day!!! That basically means for me to maintain my 106 lbs I have to eat 2,500 calories every single day. Not really easy to do if you like a good healthy, non-junk diet, like me. If I want to GAIN weight, I have to shove down 4,000 calories. EVERY DAY!!! That's like an athlete and I'm only race biking 10-20 miles per day. I started out with a high metabolism. I have never weighed over 118 pounds and I'm just under 5'3". I now average between 103-106. By the way, the dietician put my on a high calorie, good fat heavy diet that includes salmon and lots of avocado based everything, plus tips like anywhere and everywhere I can add extras to any serving. So cheese to something I would not ordinarily add that to or pine nuts or bacon bits or stir in cream cheese, etc. So bulk up the servings I am eating now. Don't just eat a hamburger; load it up completely with stuff! That will increase the calories in one sitting. Its not yet put weight on me, but I feel healthier and mentally its helped because I am not fretting about weighing under 100 pounds. The less I am nervous about the weight loss, the more stable my weight seems to be. OH, and I most certainly eat a bowl of ice cream every day. I live for ice cream or gelato or okay, anything cold and wet that has the consistency of ice cream!!! Hey, you only live once. My cholesterol is great and my doc says, "KEEP IT UP!". I race bike it off anyway so it goes along with my daily creed, "Do what makes you feel great, makes a positive impact on your life, makes you smile, does not hurt anyone else, and does not hurt you. YOU ONLY HAVE ONE LIFE. LIVE IT TO THE FULLEST!..... Lisa
