What Do You Do To Help Others ?
A MyParkinsonsTeam Member asked a question 💭

One of the problems with Parkinson's is that you can get isolated from your community, which only makes matters worse. What do you do in terms of face to face interactions that helps to connect with others?

I try to maintain my connections with the Native Plant Society of Texas, and volunteer on several committees, attend meetings, etc., and also attend some social get togethers. Maintain contact with other PD folks and give them rides so they don't stay at home and get isolated.

And then… read more

I am group leader of our local support group, write a monthly newsletter, organize speakers for meetings and arrange activities for PwP. My husband and I attend seminars locally and overseas and then share what we learn with the group. Yesterday we attended a seminar in Dubbo, a distance of 160 kms (100 miles) as we took a detour in order to pick up a man with PD who is restricted in how far he can drive. I reach out to others by visiting or phoning our members who are unable to attend meetings and share photos with them so that they feel connected to the group. Our group, though small, is very cohesive and caring.

I still work part-time helping developmentally disabled adults & teenagers. I realize how much I can really do & think when I work with those who can't do as much or think as well. And they appreciate the way I can empathize with them & try to enable them to accomplish their own goals rather than enforcing my goals on them. I enjoyed a Tango dance class put on by a local club, I try to stay active with family, especially those here in town who sometimes feel ignored. I enjoy my church family & my husband's church family (we alternate going to his & mine). I'm active on Facebook. I talk to friends & family on the phone as much as I can squeeze in. I love trying to help you guys on this website any way I can think of. When I come out of myself & serve others, I find I can do much more than I thought I could do.

I'm 69 and my diagnosis was in May 2016. I can still drive, have a masters degree in social work so in the fall 2016 and spring of 2017 I was an adjunct professor at a local university teaching one class each semester. For the upcoming spring 2018 semester I'm teaching two sections of the same class, both on Tuesdays and Thursdays. My neurologist is good with this. I do some occasional volunteer work but don't hold any positons in those organizations.

I have a close relationship with a few of my neighbours on the street and I tutor two of the children with math and reading after school. They are 12 and 10 - a lovely age. I enjoy talking with them. It makes me smile to see that they have no hesitation to help themselves to my "snacks" cupboard.
