Anyone Else Taking Gabapentin (neurontin)?
A MyParkinsonsTeam Member asked a question 💭

The carbidopa-levodopa wasn't doing it, so the first neurologist had me on a low level of Artane. On a higher dose, I had a couple of episodes of disorientation while driving on familiar freeway interchanges at night, as well as extremely dry mouth. With the combo of these 2 meds, I was feeling great, had high energy, could run on the athletic field with my students, and lost weight! That lasted almost a year, then I started getting tired, gaining weight, and mild tremors. Pain at night on… read more

I post all of my health issues to show no matter what you are going through you can get through it with the right mind frame, not to sound better than anyone else or looking for sympathy. Even I have many people worse off than me,like you said we all do. Yes you do have a right to complain because it helps to talk about it. That’s why there are therapist out there!!! Don’t make the same mistake that I did and complain to your spouse and family both close and far because they don’t want to hear it 24/7 every day!! I wouldn’t either and nor would you. Don’t call your friends to complain either because you won’t have any soon. Everyone has problems in life, health, financial, marital issues, family fighting’s will Family and not talking to each other for years or hooked on some bad addictions or in jail! No matter what we have we have to deal with it! That’s why websites like this have been created to help each other out. If you didn’t post anything there wouldn’t be any such websites.

I have been taking Gabapentin every day since January 2000 after having neck surgery. Took to help with my pain level. Now coming up on 20 years later and 7 more spine surgery’s I’m infused with titanium pins ,rods & plates from C-2 to very bottom of spine. Bones falling apart from talking Prednisone for several years to treat Chron’s Disease.that I’ve been living with for 40 years now. Anyways, I am now taking 10 Gabapentin pills a day each one is 300 MG’s. I have had Parkinson’s for roughly 15 years now and take 8 pills a day of sinemet, 25/100 mg., 4 pills of Amantadine 100 mg, each, 4pills of Ropinorole 4 mg & 1pill 2mg. Then I take 6 Tramadol 50 mg each a day, 3 cyclobenzaprine 10 mg a day for Neurothapy and Meloxicam 15 mg 1 a day for Osteoarthritis through out my entire body. I am constantly tired all the time and live with chronic 24 hour pain daily. I’ve had a illeosteomy pouch since 2010 from the Chron’s Disease. Colon is completely gone so is my complete large intestine. Bones are at osteoporosis level and with the shaking of Parkinson’s I have had screws, pins & rods fall apart from my spine and had to go in and have removed from my body cavity. I’m only 54 years old and been disabled for 9 years. The reason for all this is because I am the “Runt” of the litter! Lol! The youngest of 4 siblings. But amazingly with all this plus numerous hernias and prostate cancer I still can’t sit still, always moving around. My wife says even when I’m dead I will still be moving around! It’s been breed into me since I was born! I am not complaining or bragging just sharing. There are literally kids out there who are worse off than me,I have plenty to be thankful for and blessed with what I still have.
Hope this helps.

My husband also takes Gabapentin. His legs do not get as jittery anymore put it does'nt control the leg cramping. Sometimes he can't even walk because they put him to his knees. He uses Tonic Water (It contains a small amount of Quinine) for the cramps and it works very well.

@A MyParkinsonsTeam Member, I'll never complain again. I always know there are those worse off than me, therefore I have no reason for complaining. You just proved my point. God be with you, and bless you for your patience.
Hugs,
Teresa

Several years before being diagnoses with Parkinson's, I came down with Shingles and was prescribed Gabapentin (2016). When the shingles cleared up, I mentioned to my primary care physician that I slept really well on Gabapentin. He said he had no problems prescribing it to help me sleep. When I was changed primary care providers in 2017, the new one also had no problem continuing my Gabapentin prescription. When I was diagnosed with parkinson's in 2018 my neurologist had no problems with continuing me on Gabapentin. So I've been taking it once every night for more than 4 years. I don't seem to have any side effects from it.
