A MyParkinsonsTeam Member asked a question 💭

I was diagnosed month ago but having symptoms for a year. I am not on medication yet and planning to go for a week to Mexico. My symptom is hand tremor, sometimes very strong. My silly question is.... Is it safe to travel without medication? I live in Canada and waiting time for neurologist takes months.

This same,, I am on sinemet prescribed by my family doctors. I am very disappointed by Canadian medical system. Neurologist are practically not available to their patients when problem arises..

My general practitioner prescribed levodopa in advance of my first neurology appointment so that I could continue my job. I am Australian.

It's a really good question, not silly at all. Would you be going if you hadn't been diagnosed? If you can't get in to see your neurologist for months, you can't get any meds anyway, so go for it.

Other than the hand tremor, how are you feeling? Have you noticed any significant changes that would make you think you couldn't go on the trip or a rapid change in the past couple of months in the way you feel? If not, you should be good to go.

I went on a trip several months before I was diagnosed. Even though I sensed something was wrong, it didn't prevent me from going. Looking back, I was glad I went because it was my last extended stay vacation.

What could happen? You might experience some time where you feel lousy, but you feel that at home anyway. Do your homework before you go to find out what foods would be best for your PD and, since keeping hydrated is so important. you'll have to be mindful of that as well. The trip may give you an excuse to get in your all important exercise by staying on your feet and to keep moving.

Assuming you are traveling with others, make them aware of your illness. It's a degenerative disease, but usually progresses slowly. PD affects everybody differently, so even with my encouragement, the decision is ultimately yours.
