Has PD Or The Medication Caused You To Become Underweight?
A MyParkinsonsTeam Member asked a question 💭

In 2015, my clothes were hanging off me, and I was tired all the time & could not get up to a healthy weight. Has anyone found a solution for this? It is easy to find menus & plans for losing. But how do you gain weight?

@A MyParkinsonsTeam Member, if someone is on Sinemet, or any form of levadopa, protein is a food that will interfere with the absorption of levadopa. The protein cannot be taken in at the same time if one is to get the full effect of the medicine.

@A MyParkinsonsTeam Member, just try taking you med 30 to 45 minutes before you eat. Once the med is out of your stomach there shouldn't be much problem. If you need to eat with it try crackers with low, or non-existent protein. Just make sure the med and protein aren't in your tummy together.

My wife also lost a lot of weight. Clothes hanging off her too. Recently she has started to gain a little back. she's takes L dopa, Linzess, and Venlafaxine (Effexor),

I willl make sure that she separates the time between L dopa and protein. In know that in the morning she does--but her night L Dopa I'm not sure..

seems like everything I take says that it adds 5 pounds. Now I know it is 5 pounds for each pill and not just 5 pounds over all. Count on it.

I wish I was losing weight. I find myself craving sweets which is unusual for me. I can't taste the way i once could so my cravings are different, too. My best friend's husband, however, has PD and she makes him "healthy" sweets high in calories. She makes peanut butter fudge with oatmeal and dried fruit and nuts in order to give him protein, fiber, nutrients and calories. He has more energy, too.
