I need to renew my DL this month and I'm hearing there is a question about neurological conditions on the application? Anyone have any experience with this? Did you answer Yes or No. If you answered Yes, was it a pain in the butt to get your renewal?
Well, I had attended a seminar at my PD clinic several years ago & the recommendation of one of the speakers (with PD) was to answer the question honestly - yes, I have PD - & symptoms are controlled with medication. So last time I renewed my license I included that in my renewal app & all was well. This year I did the same thing & I got a letter from the DMV that I will have to take the driving test because of it. I am waiting for them to contact me & schedule that. I have a very good driving record, but I am a little concerned about the "what ifs" - what if I don't pass? what if my driving is restricted? I'm still employed full-time & very independent...it would be more than a huge hassle to not be able to drive!
@A MyParkinsonsTeam Member. Although there’s some doubt about what my illness actually is (?) I have informed my insurance company and they kept my premiums the same. Not sure if that is actually helpful! However at the time I did inform them that my initial diagnosis was Drug Induced PDism.
@A MyParkinsonsTeam Member. Similar question on the renewal document in the UK. Sent in the form middle of last year and keep getting letters from theDVLA saying they are waiting for or contacting again either my GP or my neurologist! Basically it’s typical bureaucracy inefficiency and incompetence! Unfortunately you are caught between a rock and a hard place! They mess you about if you inform them but your insurance is null and void if you don’t! Not sure if it’s the same in the USA but will assume that the inefficiency and incompetence is the same?
I FINALLY received my Driver's License late-July - over a month later than it should have been, I had to take the written test, vision test on 1 day. Couldn't take the driver's test at the time, though - had to make another appointment for that. The first appt time I could get was over a week away. Aced the driving test! Everything then had to be sent off to the state office & the license was finally in my hand approx 2 wks later. My experience was ridiculously difficult - I felt like I was being treated like *I* had done something wrong. They certainly didn't care that I needed to get to & from work. They didn't care that I had a trip planned & needed my ID to board a plane. After that, I would never recommend that anyone answer the question as I did - honestly!
@A MyParkinsonsTeam Member. We might be two nations separated by a common language but we still appear to have the common experience of bloody minded beaurocracy! If pen pushers can make our lives more difficult they feel their day has not been totally wasted!
