Trouble Swallowing Vitamins
A MyParkinsonsTeam Member asked a question 💭

Does anyone know of a decent multiple vitamin that isn’t the size of a horse pill? I’ve always had trouble with pills, but now, with Parkinson’s, it’s even worse. I can always do gummy vitamins, but wonder if that’s even worth the bother quality-wise. Thanks.

I never had trouble swallowing pills of any size or quantity until Parkinson's. At the va I went to a swallowing class. They told me to swallow with my chin to my neck. What do you know, it worked.
Hope this helps

Carol & @A MyParkinsonsTeam Member - the secret to swallowing without aspirating is to tuck your chin down at the exact moment of swallowing. I don't think I would enjoy my wine with Thickit! The best thing to drink with is a straw, the worst is a water bottle or a sippy cup that you have to tip your head back to use, as this makes the epiglottis unable to completely close off the windpipe & you get a chronic cough. Have you considered using a pill grinder & ,mixing your powdered vitamins with applesauce? Also jello helps a pill go down easier.

I have encountered the same problem - but in the process, also discovered that there are at least two methods of thickening liquids (yes, even water) plus already prepared thickened liquids. As far as my experiments have gone, the taste stays the same, and also yes, I am going to try this with wine - just this evening! wish me luck...

I found this as part of a treatment for my problem with aspirating, but also that the thickening of the water makes it far easier to swallow - and has greatly alleviated the problem of large pills.

Ask your own neurologist for information about thickened liquids for safer swallowing. There is a lot of info about this - my PD treatment team supplied me with a short but informative article from The Ohio State University's Werner Medical Center. I am still a novice myself and am just beginning to find out about it and will share sources as I encounter them. I hope this helps.

Drink liquids with a straw. Pu t the vitamins in your mouth then take a deep draw on the straw and swallow. Works for me.
