My friend who put this on facebook disagreed. What do you think? My opinion is a compromise (that's me): If we only eat, drink, and be merry while we are here on earth, our earthly rewards are obesity, diabetes, and alcoholism. Yet it is ungrateful of God's wonderful creation and our opportunity to be here if we don't find the Joys of living here and only focus on some unknown afterlife and miss the life we were sent here to live. Without obsessing about drinking and carousing, we can… read more

Thanks you guys for all your well-thought-out answers! @A MyParkinsonsTeam Member - I know. The 60's and 70's were Really different times. I look at all the places young people used to drink and carouse in those days and they are all derelict now. Weird! @A MyParkinsonsTeam Member - thank you. I tried to consider my answer carefully and it looks like @A MyParkinsonsTeam Member did too. @A MyParkinsonsTeam Member - thank you for the scriptural references. I have added them to my bible studies and will look them up. I appreciate your sharing them with me when I feel a bit lost about this, and will try to get back to you with more thoughts, probably on your profile page. @A MyParkinsonsTeam Member - I only take 3 meds and only the Requip/ropinirole has an alcohol warning, saying only that the med may cause drowsiness and that alcohol may make this worse. As I get older, my carousing consists of riding 4-wheelers in the nearby forests and mountains, hunting, fishing, or gathering firewood there, picnics with wine and/or beer, sipping a bit of wine now and then when my tremors get ahead of my meds, going out to eat occasionally at a restaurant that serves drinks and ordering 1 or 2 with my meal. I used to go out to the local karaoke bar at the only street light (blinking red) in this 80-block town that I love and would sing and dance once every 2 weeks, but the DJ refused to find the old songs I love. I was ruining the pace and excitement of her show, I guess, so that is past. I haven't seen my belly button in years! But I do spend a lot of time at my computer "talking" to cyber friends, or should I say "talking at" instead of "talking with". It is so rare to get a real-time response. @A MyParkinsonsTeam Member - OK, I'm looking up the context of C.P.'s quote. I found out he lives in Paradise Valley Montana, near where I spent 1 1/2 of the best years of my live and one of my favorite places in the world. I'll let you know what I find out!

To me, when you are facing a debilitating disease like PD, or even if your not, it's all a matter of personal choice. "Carpe Diem" may work for some, quiet reflection for others and any number of behaviors in between. If you aren't hurting anyone else then it shouldn't matter. Just do what helps you cope and be as happy as you can be.
