Sinimet makes me feel like s*** all the time so I quit taking it since I’ve been housebound and while the symptoms have worsened somewhat they have not been as much of a problem as feeling as badly as Sinimet makes me feel 24/7. My wife claims that she heard one of the doctors say that the sentiment also slows down the progression of the Parkinson’s. Does anybody know if that’s valid. The symptoms are not bad enough to want to be trapped at home feeling that poorly.
Sinemet is unpredictable no PD patient are equal. .Multiple combinations is the treatment of choice but exercise is an alternative that may improve use the medication in favor of you..Parkinson is your diagnosis,Not your Prognosis.
@A MyParkinsonsTeam Member, the more Sinemet I was prescribed, the worse I felt. I was at a point where I told my neurologist that I needed to reduce my dosage. Over time, I ended up eliminating the Sinemet altogether and relied only on Requip to get me through each day. Unfortunately, that course of treatment lasted only so long and I needed to start the Sinemet again. Fortunately for me, I have been able to take Sinemet now without the side effects that I found so troubling the first time around.
Could you be on too high of a dosage? Did you quit the Sinemet all at once? You should withdraw from it slowly as rapid withdrawal can cause problems for you as well.
I've done quite a bit of research on PD and have never read anything about Sinemet slowing this disease's progression.
This is Dave responding, yes and no to both your questions. Sinimet will slow the progression of the disease, and unfortunately, make you feel nauseated for until you adjust to the medication. I lost 20 pounds when I started the medication. My PD doctor cut the prescribed dosage from 1 25-100mg tab 3 times per day to 1/2 tab one time per day for a week. Then he increased the dosage to 1/2 tab 2 times per day for 1 week. Then 1/2 tab 3 times per day until I was back to the original dosage. He also told me to take the medication just before eating a meal, not 20 minutes before a meal as prescribed. You need to adjust to the medication. Sinimet is the"Gold Standard" of PD medications Do not get discouraged and not take it. Also when I get nauseated I eat 3-4 ginger snaps with a glass of mild. It helps me, I feel good and my PD has remained mild for 6 years now. Don't give up!!!!! God bless you.
I can relate. Have felt nauseated since I started the medication, 3 months ago. From my research, not much slows the progression. It's a individual trajectory.
I learn a lot from Webinars on Parkinson's.
Good luck!
