I'm Just Wondering How Soon After Diagnosis Did Many Of You Start Medication?
A MyParkinsonsTeam Member asked a question 💭

My follow up visit with the neurologist was basically a repeat of my initial visit and more diagnostic testing. Since my tremors are still mild, he has not yet started me on medication. I feel like aside from tremors, I am now having other symptoms such as stiffness when standing, a feeling of having heavy legs that don't want to move as smoothly as they used to, and sometimes a feeling of being off balance. I'm just wondering if I should anticipate beginning medication at my next visit in… read more

I do not have tremors but my balance was bad and Was falling a lot. I eventually fell and broke my r. femur. At that point was tested for dopamine and found to need medication. I wish I had started medicine earlier as I probably would not have suffered a broken bone.

Thanks for your answer Ann. I'm hoping the neurologist will start me on something in July when I return for my next visit.

Hi Glennmaxwell
I will tell you this. You go with your heart about what you need to do. I don't have PD, but my husband does. My husband tried the levodopa medications but he was afraid of the side effects of the medications and came off of them. The best thing that have worked for my husband is exercising. Keep moving. He also did rock steady boxing for 3xs a week. Of course, he's not in that right now because the gym's are closed. So, the best advice I can give you is go with your gut feeling and you do what you think is best for you. But, never quit moving. Moving is one of the biggest keys to help slow Parkinson's down. I don't know if what I have said helps or not. I wish you well on your PD journey. It's a difficult journey. God bless you.

I was started in propanolol about a year and a half before I was diagnosed, that was for the tremors. I was also having stiffness in my legs, especially after sitting too long. I thought that was because I'm getting older. Finally, after being diagnosed with PD, I was prescribed Carbidodopa/Levodopa my first Neurology visit. The big thing with PD is to keep moving. Go to Physical therapy and learn how to fight back. Parkinson's plays with your brain and tells you you can't do things. Physical therapy helps you learn how to do it anyway.
