Any Suggestions For Dealing With Vomiting, Rapid Weight Loss And Lack Of Appetite?
A MyParkinsonsTeam Member asked a question 💭

Hi all
My Mom was diagnosed last year with PD. She has been doing well until about a month ago when she started vomiting every time she eats, even just a teaspoon of chicken broth comes right back up. She says she has excessive phlegm in her throat and when she swallows food, it moves it down and then everything comes back up. She has had an endoscopy with good results, no ulcers or cancer or anything unusual.

My mom has literally not eaten in about 6 weeks. It seems to have started with an… read more

Have her get a mri of her abdomen even though the endoscopy was ok.That happened to me and I asked for that. I had and ulcer in my abdominal aorta which only 8% of the people in the world get this I was told. I hope it’s not. Will she eat sweets? This may sound crazy but sometimes pudding,!ice cream, candy helps. I had to do that to eat Sometimes a teaspoon of grape jelly then small ant of food and repeat. If she’s not diabetic give her coke with vanilla ice cream as a coke float Small amts. at first to see how she does Good luck. Grape jelly has pectin which helps settle your stomach and have her get fresh air. Try cool was cloth around neck when she’s eating and sit up straight,

Thank you all for your insight and caring. All things we tried did not help. It turns out that while we were focusing on Mom's PD, she was slowly and unknowingly overdosing on Metformin (glucophage) which was supposed to control her type 2 diabetes. She had been taken off her other diabetes medicines because she was otherwise able to control glucose with diet. I don't know why her GP left her on such a high dose of Metformin-- 1500mg/day! So the metformin caused a build up of lactic acid, which caused kidney failure and sepsis, and she is now at this moment in a critical care unit fighting for her life, on dialysis, blood transfusions, and in a medial coma. We don't know day to day if she will recover from this (she went in to the hospital by ambulance 6 days ago) and are preparing to let her go if she doesn't improve. We have had small flickers of hope: her blood levels are better, kidneys have started to work a little, she may be able to be weaned off the respirator any day. But we are in a horrible limbo waiting, and all the while cannot even visit her due to Covid restrictions.

I post this with a heavy heart and in hopes that anyone out there who takes metformin will insist on regular re-evaluation on the need/dose for this medicine. All the symptoms were there with my mom: extreme fatigue, confusion, loss of appetite and vomiting, severe dehydration, muscle weakness, hallucinations, all with a rapid decline in overall health-- but no one thought to look at those symptoms as anything other than PD issues. Please please if you or a loved one takes Metformin and has any of these symptoms, a simple blood test is all it takes to rule out metformin overdose (the results will show high lactic acid).

Christine MGreeley: Did you try the diabetic sweets? I drink diabetic Snapple. I can't tolerate regular Snapple. I'm not diabetic. Good luck. Hope you have a good day and stay safe.

Hi @A MyParkinsonsTeam Member, I have projectile vomiting if I take the Carb/Dopa on an empty stomach. One neurologist gave me permission to eat one dracker with the pill and told me to flush it down immediately with at least 8 oz, of water. I do NOT have a problem with phlegm forming though. The next neurologist I tried said: "Try only waiting 1/2 hour after eating, instead of an hour,, skip the cracker, but continue to flush it down quickly with a minimum of 8 oz water
I can't see that I get any benefit from the carb/dopa. The dr tells me to take four a day. I manage to take one or two a day.. and if I eat a small serving of yogurt and set a timer for 1/2 hr. then eat a cracker when I take the pill and flush with an electrolyte preparation, I am usually ok.

orming.
