I would like to know if anyone has had any success with antidepressants for Parkinson's related depression. Since Parkinson's involves the loss of dopamine, I don't know which anti-depressants would work best to compensate for that. I have not had success with SSRIs, and I'm now starting protriptylene, which is a tricyclic antidepressant. I feel the levadopa definitely affects my mood sometimes for the better, sometimes for the worse. Also I have seen articles which say it can help your mood… read more
During my research and reading about Parkinsons that the best antidepressant was “Effexor”. It works differently with Parkinsons. Most antidepressants mellow you out but still keep you down. I spoke to my Neuro and she didn’t know it made a difference. What happens is it works more like Speed is suppose to work. She switched me over and sure enough I know have energy most days. Overall I feel more upbeat. Maybe it will work for you too. Good luck!
I have to take sertraline every lunchtime. I have Parkinson’s and other non related health issues that j have caused my left leg to drag. I have been a very active person with a full life. I’m now struggling just to manage my house I.don’t know what’s Parkinson’s or not anymore. I can go on forever as could we all. I was crying all the time when Not on the sertraline I am thinking more positively now and have tried a few new activities and how to do things easier. I am a lot happier and have even put on a little weight. Sorry to have rambled so long.
I take trazodone for antidepressants not severe, xanax for anxiety no side affects - i feel it also helps with mild stiffness.
Of course take C/L three times a day usually but experiment occasionally.
Thanks for the response. Do you take anything for Parkinson’s?
I was diagnosed with clinical depression 1997 and have been on Lexapro and Wellbutrin, I’m also on Trileptal for Bipolar. The combination of these seem to keep me in good shape. I do have days when the depression overwhelms me, if I get myself moving with some kind of activity I can push through but there’s times I have to just sit quietly. Keep your chin up, you’ve got this. Collette
