What Financial Assistance Is Available For Care - US?
A MyParkinsonsTeam Member asked a question 💭

First and foremost being a caregiver is a tough job and doing it solo is even worse. My profession is running a company that provides custodial care. I hate that word but that is the definition that is used by Medicare nationwide to describe the need for assistance with Activities of Daily Living (ADL's). There are 6 basic categories for ADL's: bathing, dressing, toileting, eating, continence and transferring. In our company we call it personal care since custodial care sounds so janitorial.

@A MyParkinsonsTeam Member unfortunately there are certain diagnosis that will be denied: Parkinson's, MS, other neurological diseases, any sign of dementia.

There used to be types of policies that you pay a lot into and they give you a small benefit. I am just not sure of those.

@A MyParkinsonsTeam Member,

I was wondering if you knew of Long term Care Insurance companies that would sell a LTC Policy to someone like me that has Stage 3 PD, but is still pretty active and has PD under control with meds? Thanks, Alan

PS... Several local agents did some initial checking for me, and got back saying that once the formal diagnosis of PD was made, they would no longer write me a policy... Last year, I was denied insurance, because in my doctors records, I claim to have some memory loss in short term memory

Very useful and important info. Thanks so much for sharing your professional expertise.

Based on personal experience with my Mom, a non-PD patient who required at home care, there is another consideration associated with hiring someone privately. Be sure to have a rider on your home owners insurance (not very costly) to cover you if the private hire gets injured on the job. Agency hires should be covered by the agency as long as the agency is paying their salary, not you.

We tried to get my husband long term care insurance when he was first diagnosed and had no symtoms except slight dragging of one foot when tired. We were denied.

Having dealt with insurance companies, my experience was abysmal. My husband paid into a "long term policy" from his employer. When I inquired about benefits, I was told they pay $200.00 a month for outside help after I presented bills then 90 days if accepted. He worked for a phone company for 50 years. I imagine we would not have financial worries We are in Calif, states and companies may be more humane. Bless you all Pam
