I recognize this Video by TED is for cardiovascular therapy and not Parkinson's... But this speaker does a really nice job explaining what to expect from today's stem cells, verse earlier generation of trail from years past.. Well worth the time to watch it... Alan

Amen...

Hopefully "our" up and coming generation of creative and gifted children, who manage to write "computer code" at 5 years of age, --- Just might look at "these regenerative diseases" in some small way different, and choose a different path to discover a cure,,,, Can't give on hope !! Peace Alan

Hi @A MyParkinsonsTeam Member

That is precisely why I research such intriguing technology for myself... And I choose to share what I've learn to people not content to live with a poor quality of life due to old and outdate thinking with the current treatment - that so many with PD have experienced.....

Also some of us choose to be more optimistic in what new research and technology have been made available, and are encouraged by recent medial developments... Like just about anything we touch around us have all continue to improve and change.... Think of cars, plane, computers, our homes, and even life in general has all continued to evolve over time.... Such is the same I see in Stem Cell Therapy...

Would you rather have stayed with rocks beating clean the family clothe by a stream?? Or the convenient washboard in the basement? How did we ever "afford" the new fangled electric wash machines...

Very thought provoking no doubt.... That previous list of Stem Cells comparisons above - told me volumes on why some work, and other's don't.... So many variables... to truly consider ! Peace, Alan

Why worry about who will pay for it or whether it is proven therapy. These are details. It is vision and seeing past the current obstacles that creates change. Without it we will have the same therapies for treating Parkinson's as we do today. 25 years ago I couldn't communicate in a forum like this and there were many who asked why we would need the internet. But, persistence and foresight brought forth the technology that we all take for granted today. I understand that stem cell therapy may not help us today but what about your grandchild who wakes up at 60 years old with a twitch in their finger. They may be the beneficiary of today's stem cell research. Please keep bringing forth this information.

@MyParkinsonsTeam users... This article was very enlightening to me, and may help you understand - that for regressive diseases like Parkinson's, MS, and Alzheimer's this is can be an option... You decide, I totally agree it is a very difficult choice, but the ability to save another's potential life makes total sense to me.... Alan

Stem Cell Of America’s Fetal Stem Cells Compared to Stem Cells - Published on Feb 4, 2014 When compared to the fetal stem cells used by SCA, all other types of stem cells in use today have limited therapeutic outcomes. They have done over 3,000 successful procedures in past 20 years

Stem Cell Of America's Fetal Stem Cells have the following positive qualities:

•Our fetal stem cells are the cellular building blocks of the 220 cell types within the body.
•Our fetal stem cells remain in an undifferentiated state and therefore are capable of becoming any tissue, organ or cell type within the body.
•Our Fetal stem cells also release cytokines. Cytokines are cell-derived, hormone-like polypeptides that regulate cellular replication, differentiation, and activation. Cytokines can bring normal cells and tissues to a higher level of function, allowing the body’s own healing mechanisms to partner with our transplanted fetal stem cells for repair and new growth.
•Our fetal stem cells continuously locate and repair any damage they encounter.
•Our fetal stem cells have the ability to be given to anyone without any matching because they have the property of "immune privilege". This means that you can give the cells to any patient without matching, use of immunosuppressive drugs and without rejection. There have been over 3000 patients treated in the last twenty years with no negative reaction.
•Our fetal stem cells not only cannot form cancer but instead THEY attack cancer.

The primary reason Fetal Stem Cells are not in general use is not because of their safety or efficacy but instead because of politics and the fear of loss of income from those supplying traditional medical treatments.

Adult Stem Cells (Two Types):

Autologous Stem Cells: taken from the patient; the donor and recipient are the same individual

Limitation:
•The patient’s own cells are inherently inferior because of whatever particular reason they are a patient in the first place and as with every adult, as part of the normal ageing process, their immune system becomes weaker and weaker as they age.
•You cannot obtain neuronal (nerve) stem cells which are essential in the treatment of a multitude of neurologic diseases such as Parkinson’s disease and Multiple Sclerosis.
