What Are Your Thought On Deep Brain Stimulation For PD?
A MyParkinsonsTeam Member asked a question đź’

My husbands Dr wants him to consider the DBS surgery. Anyone have any thoughts good or bad? Any experiences you or friends have had with DBS?

I attended a very helpful presentation about DBS last year given by my neurologist and another doc who is a leading DBS guy in Houston. The "before" and "after" videos and live endorsements convinced me that I will be investigating that option soon. I did read recently that it will be more effective before the patient turns 70, which will speed up my decision.

Good day, I bid you greetings from down under Australia.

Re DBS. I undrewent DBS in October 2009 with successful out comes.

I had hypre dyskinesia.

Before the operation, my mindset was, that if the unnatural erratic
movements of dyskinesia could be reduced by 50% , then that
would be no mean achievement, I was not expecting miriacles.

Indeed thanks to the genius of my neuro-surgeon and his team, the
dykskinesia was reduced by almost 100%.

The procedure was carried out, in the teaching hospital,
in the city where I live.

Sir Charles Gairdner Hospital,
PERTH,
Western Australia.

The battery has been changed three times.

Having had DBS has changed my life completely.
I have to say that these last eight years post surgery,
have been the best years of my life.

MAINTAIN A WINNING POSITION.

My husband had DBS surgery several years ago and it definitely made an improvement. As his doctor said before the surgery, it will give him his life back. He functions much better than before the surgery. He is still on a lot of medication but not as much as before the surgery. The reason for that is because the electrode on one side is in perfect position but the other is not. However, with the new technology that has been developed since his surgery they can do a better job on placement. Just be sure to research where to have it done. I would recommend only a hospital that has been named a Center of Excellence by National Parkinsons Foundation. Good luck.

I have a lot of friends who are very happy wit the DBS operation. My main concern is what the Medicare is going to cover in the future.

Hi Judy,
I bid you greetings from down under Australia.

Re DBS,

In answer to your questions.

The battery is replaced when it runs out of charge.
This is done in hospital day surgery.

DBS was easy to get used to, i experienced no problems physically,

As for feeling nervous before the procedure, well being only human,
I have to say I was indeed nervous, yet i need not have worried.

HOPE THIS HELPS WITH ANY PRE OP ANXIETY.

I WISH YOU WELL..

MAINTAIN A WINNING POSITION.
