Painful Fingers
A MyParkinsonsTeam Member asked a question 💭

Does anyone experience painful hand and feet. In the left hand my index finger is painful and swollen round the joints, and unable to bend it. Could it possibly be gout?

@A MyParkinsonsTeam Member, @A MyParkinsonsTeam Member My mother and a friend of mine have had gout in the hands/fingers - very painful. I am currently experiencing varying pains and lack of circulation in certain fingers (esp middle left) and wondering about the cause - carpal tunnel syndrome, gout....? Still investigating. Will watch this story line develop with interest and also report back if anything of help.

Think the medication I’m on is allopurinol but need to check the name of the one I take if I get gout. I keep that in my old motor home for when I’m away!

If it is gout you would not be asking! The pain from gout is excruciating. I’m on permanent medication to reduce my chances of it returning and I’m keeping my fingers crossed that it never comes back. Only ever had it in my ankle or toes and the pain was so bad I had to try not to touch anything with my foot.
Often a related sign other than the pain is that the area where you get the gout feels as if it is giving off heat.
If you’re unfortunate enough to have it there are medications that are very fast at controlling it.

I take allopurinol everyday to prevent gout. I have never heard of gout in the hands or fingers.

I had carpal tunnel syndrome in my right arm which needed surgery last year. This pain is more isolated to the left index finger and very different altogether. Research online suggests gout or maybe arthritis. Always a possibility as one ages, and probably the most likely. Time will tell.
