How Has PParkinson’s Effected Your Balance ?
A MyParkinsonsTeam Member asked a question 💭

It seems that my PD symptoms are mild except for loss o balance. I’m having difficulty tolerating this one. Anyone else with this issue ?

Physical Therapy helped me a lot. Strengthening muscles that hold me upright, gave me better posture and I could walk better.

Try doing some balance exercises by focussing on a particular spot on the ground and slowly lifting one leg out to the side and then the other leg. You must keep your eye on the same spot without getting distracted!

Yes, PD has affected my balance. My neurologist sent me to rehab. The rehab helped but didn't cure the problem. But I do have exercises that help. The important thing is not to fall.

I have started to get some balance problems occasionally, though it is partly due to exhaustion I think! I found that Pilates exercises (building strength in core) greatly helped, have occasionally used the wii and balance exercises. You may find walking poles (Nordic walking or lei) help your cadence, balance and arm swing when out for a walk. Good luck with finding a solution that suits you..

No question that loss of balance is difficult, and PD drugs don't help. I've found physical therapy and exercise to be a great help - my balance is not as good as it was before PD, but now I can right myself. Also have been using and getting good results from Jane Adams' dvd Balance and Strength for Seniors, which includes some modified Tai Chi - I've heard other pwp have had good results with Tai Chi. If you don't have a physical therapist, phone your neuro for a referral - PT had almost immediate results for me.
