Has Anybody With PD In This Forum, Who Is Taking A Benzo Drug Also For A Long Time Been Able To Successfuly Withdraw From It ?
A MyParkinsonsTeam Member asked a question 💭

If so, what was the repercussion on the PD progress rate ? As it is, withdrawing from these drugs is very difficult. What I want to find out is if there is additional complexity because of PD, for example REMSleep issue where clonazepam is used for treatment. Will appreciate comments from actual sufferers or pointers to helpful sites or blogs.

Hi @A MyParkinsonsTeam Member. I got switched to clonazepam just two weeks ago because my wife has reported that I "run" at night. I had been taking small doses of Lorazepam (0.5 mg twice a day), and that was like heaven! In about 30 minutes I felt great and all symptoms just floated away...I got off to a bumpy start with the clonazepam, awakening in a very foggy state, but now I seem to sleep longer more often and wake up more clearheaded and better rested. I was anxious about making it through the day without a small benzo dose, but half a tablet (0.25 mg) of the clonazepam before bed seems to be doing OK. During the day I walk strongly and smoothly and get through a couple of vigorous exercise classes per week. Somewhere down the line, I might try to get off it. But for right now, the better sleep and rested feeling during the day are worth it to me. Good luck!.

Hi KenL,

Thanks for narrating your experience. I hear you. Unfortunately most of the doctors in US still freely prescribe benzos, even when there are other alternatives. Benzos are so addictive that they are not supposed to be prescribed for more than a few days. The Rem Sleep problem is addressed by using something like Melatonin.
which does equally well as clonazepam. In my case I was prescribed clonazepam for general anxiety disorder long before I was diagnosed with Parkinson's. I came off it by tapering it very slowly. It took me more than 4 years to do it. Then after diagnosis of PD I was again prescribed clonazepam because I had acute nausea and weight loss. This time clonazepam did not work. I was prescribed Remeron. That fixed that particular issue and helped a lot with my anxiety. Now my issue is getting off the clonazepam again. The tapering process is so stress causing, that it might well worsen my disease progression. I am trying to find out if there is less stressful way of coming off it. The reason for coming off is that it is causing lots of cognition and memory issue for me. I feel trapped now. If anybody in this board has similar experience, please contact. Thanks!!

I took clonazepam but also woke like i was foggy headed or drugged. I stopped taking it. I am on trazadone for depression and it makes me sleepy.
I guess i should have tried differ dosages.
