Temporo Mandibular Joint -TMJ And Parkinson's
A MyParkinsonsTeam Member asked a question 💭

My husband has atypical Parkinson's for the last 5 years. I recently saw youtube video from Dr. Gary Demerjian of a mouth piece that improves the gait and movement of Parkinsons patient. I became excited, called the office for an appointment. My husband is skeptical as we have to fly there in his clinic in California but has anyone tried this? I would like to hear more about it. Is there science behind a mouthpiece that can help improve movement,

The doctor's website does not mention Parkinson's at all. I would want to know the percentage of success that he has with Parkinson's patients, and where in professional journals he has reported on this procedure. Professionals with legitimate success write about it in peer-reviewed journals so that they can share what has worked and others can repeat and demonstrate / support their success.

Rufglgo and FranBL, this is the video I was talking about . It shows the doctor trying the mouthpiece on a Parkinson's patient. Please feel free to give me your opinions. Happy Saturday!

Thank you, FranBL. The link you sent was informative and it does make me think there must be some science behind it. Although my husband doesn't have TMJ (symptoms are headaches, etc), the youtube video of an improvement in gait, walking and balance of a man with Parkinsons after wearing the mouthpiece caught my attention. I wish I can call that patient in the video. I did call that doctor's office but the secretary said we have to go see him to talk to him as he need to do
tests before he can say if my husband is a good candidate for the mouth piece. My husband hates travelling because of his instability and balance issues, so I really need to convince him this is worth it, just to get him on the plane.

I found a study about one patient whose symptoms improved with a mouthpiece. https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/?term=parki... I would ask this doctor for the specific studies that support his work before travelling all that way.
