Cannabis As Treatment
A MyParkinsonsTeam Member asked a question 💭

In Australia medical cannabis has been legalized. Many people are trying it and saying it works for many things like depression, pain etc. Im constantly getting people suggesting my husband who has PD should try it, but the neurologist says its not properly trialed yet and he would not recommend it. Im reluctant to try it as he has many other meds that could cause problems with cannabis.
Anyone tried it and found it successful?

See my answer to Marsha Portnoi.....it all depends on what you are using. Most CBD also contains some THC. It's the THC that can cause anxiety. You want to be using a pure CBD oil with .3%% of THC or less. (I am one of those people who does not handle THC very well.) Doctors are hesitant to recommend it because it doesn't have the AMA's approval. My veterinarian would not suggest we use it for my dog's arthritis (even though it has been shown to be quite effective for that) because although it's legal in all 50 states, it still doesn't have federal approval and she was concerned about it affecting her license. No hard and fast answers for you but it will be a verrrrrry long time before any MD will recommend it, regardless of how many anecdotal successes they see in their patients.

Wow. I have not heard that. I live in Missouri, and they passed for medical marijuana, but I don't know anyone that has used it for PD yet., but hope it works for some people. I have enough problems, and don't need anymore.

My husbands neuro is ok with CBD oil. We asked about medical marijuana and he also said it’s not been studied enough.
I am more amazed at what I am reading about Thiamine Hcl therapy! Check it out in the Q and A on this site!

My Movement Disorder Specialist will not recommend it. He says that there have been no large scale studies, and that the studies that have been done were conducted by entities financially supported by the Cannabis industry.

Thanks everyone. I am carer for my husband, he has dementia. He is not able or interested in making these decisions and accepts my decisions. Maybe you ate right about our neurologist but he is our third and by far the best. Also he is not in any pain, which seems to be the stated benefit. So, I haven't heard any convincing reason to try it.
