So my father has parkinsons and we have noticed he loses balance a lot. Falls down slowly
We don't really know what to do and how to help him further with this. He does have a cane and a walker and I bought him an apple watch so it can alert us if he falls. I just think things like putting on his shoes are going to be really difficult given its hard for him to get up. Just really difficult to see, we try to help as much as we can. I don't live at home however he is with my mom who helps as much… read more
My guy has the same problem. I don't know what can be done, as you can't be there with him every minute. The doctors keep telling my guy that he needs to keep moving. That the more he sits, the more his brain loses control over his body to tell it to move. He has a walker and I was hoping that he would start moving more because of the walker. But he doesn't. All he does is sit in the recliner and watch tv. He's afraid of falling so he doesn't move or do anything. As a result he has given in and I see him going downhill faster then he should. He gets dizzy when he bends over. I don't know what to tell you as it's very frustrating.
At Zappoes.com there are 2 pairs of shoes that I buy because I can't tie my shoes. New Balance, avery good shoe company makesthem both. One is a regular tennis shoe with two velcro straps instead of laces and the other is my favorite, their slip ons. It's not a slipper...it's an actual tennis shoe with excellent arch support, etc. I love mine. FYI
I have a bracelet i wear...if i hurt myself i simply press a button..and the speaker box will beep loudly and an attendant will ask you if you're ok...if not or have no response, EMS is notified to come to your home...
P.S. There is even a spring loaded seat pad that will actually lift you up slowly that I hear works real well. I'm saving up to buy a nice recliner that actually stands you up with a motor...not cheap. All of us PD people are different...I 'm 70 and still have decent shoulder and arm strength which helps me get up and down by myself...even with my arthritic knees. Elevated toilet seats help too. Sorry about the long winded response. Good luck. 😍
Hi...I'm sorry your Dad is having these problems. The first and most obvious thing that I am sure you have thought of is a wheelchair. If your Mom needs to help him get up I would buy him a "gait belt" which is a padded belt with hand loops for your Mom to help him stand or sit or even stabilize him with from behind when he is using his walker. A good answer for your shoe worries which I do myself is I go to Zappos.com and search "New Balance Slide Ons". I have difficulty tying my shoes so I buy 2 products they have that work great. One is a regular tennis or walking shoe that has two Velcro straps instead of laces. The other is an actual slide on. It is not a slipper...it's a heavy duty walking tennis shoe that stays on your feet without any back on them. You don't even have to bend over...you just slide your foot in no hands required. I love mine. New Balance makes an excellent product...lots of support and stability. I also just put a bed rail on my bed to give me something to pull myself up or lower myself into the bed with. It's a life changer for me ...love it. You can find many selections on Amazon or Walmart. Easy no tools required installation. Besides my walker and canes that's about it. I have installed a few grab handles here and there in key places if I need the additional stability. I hope that helps.
