Breathing is a natural function of life but so often we get it all wrong. Having been a choral director for most of my life, it has been a big part of my life to teach people how to breathe. Most people breath too shallowly to be very effective. Ask someone to take a deep breath and watch them do it. If their shoulders move, they did it wrong. Chest muscles have very little to do with breathing. If their lower torso moves out, they did it right. the muscles that make you breathe are located in the abdomen. An old trick is to place your hands on your stomach with the tips of your middle fingers just barely touching. Take a deep breath and see if the fingers move apart. If they do, you are breathing correctly. Take a deep yawn and watch your abdomen move out. that is correct breathing. Their are no muscles in the lungs at all. You breathe with the muscles that control your diaphragm. Practice breathing with your diaphragm and see the difference. Careful, don't make yourself dizzy with all the fresh oxygen you will receive. This can help even with lungs that have disease. That is not my belly sticking out, it is the results breathing correctly and I am sticking to that story.

@A MyParkinsonsTeam Member - So what is your wife doing that is driving you Insane? Sometimes loving and caring about your spouse is a bit smothering, especially when we need to be allowed to do things for ourselves. Have you gone together to your neurologist or to a counselor so she understands not to do everything for you and to encourage you to be as normal as possible? I have read this so many times on this website, & I experience it myself with my spouse. It helps both Parky & spouse so much - freeing up the spouse from an overwhelming super-caregiver role & helping the Parky to learn to forge new neural pathways & retrain our motions to conquer our symptoms.
