How To Alleviate Leg Tremors At Night
A MyParkinsonsTeam Member asked a question 💭

My mom was diagnosed with Parkinson’s 2 years ago and was given Sinemet 2 tablets 3 times a day, but due to the Side effects of serious paranoia and mood swings, she reduced the dosage to 1 tablet twice a day in the last 3 months, lately she’s having terrible leg tremors especially at night time... any suggestions/tips to alleviate the tremors, THANK YOU!

I just talked to my Neurologist today and asked what is the limit on Sinemet one should take. I take 2 tabs 25/100 four times a day, plus entacapone. I also take one more tab of sinemet before bedtime. He told me if it was too much, I would be having side effects such as your mother is having, so for me that dosage is good. Is your mother able to exercise at all, walking or a stationery bike helps me. If I don't do the exercise, my tremors are worse. I hope she can find some relief.

Like I was saying in one of my posts we are pioneers in Parkinson's. Our neurologists. Really don't know how we're feeling. We want to fix things right away 'cause that trembling is the most horrible feeling in the whole world.I've changed my medication myself. Instead of telling the neurologist, because they're kind of hard to get ahold of. But I do the research myself to make sure it's safe to do that. Only one time did I not do the research and I ended up in a hospital in Anchorage AK. So. Yes, the Cinemat will cause involuntary movement which is called dyskenesia And that means she's getting too much of it. So the 2 tablets was too much. One tablets not enough. How about have her try 1 1/2?

The evenings are the worse for me for offs, dystonia, bradykenesia and of course tremors. It sounds like shes not taking enough Sinemet, it also gets used to a dose and will require that same amount of not more ...read about neuroleptic malignant syndrome. Have they tried gabapentin and was she talking anything else when she experienced the partanoia and mood swings?

I get what I call leg crawlies at night--restless leg syndrome. When it starts, I do a stretching exercise which immediately makes the crawlies to away and I can get back to sleep. The stretches may help your Mom. Sit on floor with legs outstretched. Bring right leg over the left, putting the right foot on the floor on the outside of the left leg. Bring left arm around bent knee and twist your body at the waist to the right. Have your right arm stretched out behind you with your hand on the floor for support. Slightly pull the bent knee towards your left keeping your left leg stretched out front with the toes up or bent towards you. Hold position for a minute then reverse and do the other side. Sounds complicated and convoluted, but it's not. May be difficult to do at first but give it a try. It certainly brings instant relief to me!! If your Mom can't get up and down from the floor, she could try this in her bed. Good luck.
ps if she's a heavy coffee/tea/cola drinker, cutting back on those caffeine drinks may help, too.
