A MyParkinsonsTeam Member asked a question 💭

I have problems with my speech. I tend to slur. I have been at a number of neurologists in South Africa. As I am also moving slower and Carbidopa seems to work, I take 5-6 tablets a day.

I also take Requip 4mg.

Lately I have developed problems with drooling. Carbidopa appears to assist with drooling.

What do you think?

I have 4 major concerns; slowness, speech, drooling and getting up from a chair. I do not have any other “typical” symptoms.

Should I get another medical opinion?

Doing physical therapy may help with the issue of getting up. When my husband did the LSVT-Big program, one of the first exercises they worked on was standing up. Strengthening the legs and working on good form make a difference.

If you can find a neurologist who is a movement disorder specialist it might help. They specialize in disorders like PD. I, too, have had speech, drooling, and difficulty swallowing. I worked with a speech therapist, and it was very beneficial. My speech is quicker, I can swallow without choking, and I was taught to make myself swallow my saliva more often, which helps with the drooling. I was told that if the drooling gets worse the neurologist can give me Botox injections into my saliva so they’ll produce less saliva.
Getting up from a chair was helped by getting a motorized recliner that lifts me to almost a standing position. I don’t much advice about getting up from a regular chair. That is still problematic for me as well. One thing that I have to do is sit so my stronger leg goes out first to stand up, as it can bear more weight.
Finding a movement disorder specialist was really key for me.
