My PD Meds Aren't Working. My Doctor Thinks I Have Gastroparisis. Has Anyone Been Diagnosed With It?

I am alwaysnauseated, have no appetite, feel bloated after just a bit of food and have pain in my upper abdomen. I cannot gain weight and now weigh 93 pounds.

You know I have it Beep. Gastroparesis can have several causes but in parkinsonism the slower your muscles move in the rest of your body the worse the gastroparesis can be and the more complications can develop. It becomes harder to digest what does go through. It helps to eat small, soft food meals more frequently. And if bad comes to worse try using ensure or something similar once or twice a day. A session with a dietician can be helpful.

@The Beep Sorry to hear you are feeling this way! I self-diagnosed with gastroparesis maybe 8 or 9 years ago when I was feeling exactly as you describe. Since then I have mentioned it to both my gastroenterologist and my neurologist, and they agree that that was the problem. Read up all you can about this condition online. Our digestive muscles don't work as well as they should (like the rest of our bodies from PD!), so food does not digest well. I am frustrated that I can't find the info online that I found back then which listed all of the things someone with gastroparesis should avoid eating. The list was two pages long! One thing that was mentioned was only eat meat that is ground; it doesn't matter what kind of meat, only that it is not a solid piece of meat that you will cut up and need to really chew. I also found that for myself I can't eat raw apples anymore, not even if I peel them first. I used to love them and often had one with lunch. Not anymore, though for me this is not the case with any other kind of fruit. Also, I can't have a salad more than maybe one day a week. I can't tolerate the lettuce on a regular basis. Some with a burger or an occasional small salad, but that's it. Since I adjusted my diet, my digestion improved. Now I can actually eat meat, but whenever I start to feel like you are feeling, I go right back to ground meat and avoid all lettuce. Hope this helps and you begin to feel better!

Multiple small meals is the way to do it. The doctor said to avoid hi fat or high fiber meals. What a bummer for me; I love raw veggies but they don’t stay down.
