Do You Smell Smoke? Olfactory Hallucinations
A MyParkinsonsTeam Member asked a question ๐Ÿ’ญ

Even even though my grandfather passed away many years ago, I still smell his cigarette smoke. I Smell cigarette Smoke in my own house where I know that no one has ever lit up. I Smell cigarette smoke in all the weirdest places.

I have had visual hallucinations off and on for many years. I know that is common for individuals with PD. Besides that, has anyone else had olfactory hallucinations? What do you smell?

I have a deminished sense of smell and taste of certain things. I can barely smell or taste food and spices such as cinnamon, lemon, dill, banana, etc. One of my favorite candies has always been licorice, yet I can barely taste it now. I've also noticed that I can barely smell gasoline?
I have had many occasions where I would or wouldn't smell something unexpected and other people around me would or wouldn't smell something. I have smelled smoke or a rubber burning and no one else could smell it and I've had other around me say do you smell that weird smell? Yet, I could not smell it. So I can and can't smell and taste as I could or should, and it comes and goes at will.
It's rather frustrating.
When I have no other explanation, I just blame it on the Parkinsonโ€™s. It has become my catch-all for all the unexpected and unexplained little peccadilloes I find in this current stage of life.

I have had auditory and visual hallucinations, but not olfactory. The thought of losing my sensory pleasures was very upsetting. I decided to develop a olfactory memory and I decided on a exquisite perfume. I spent hours at a department store's perfume section. I finally chose my most mesmerizing fragrance. If it was going to be my forever memory, I wanted a good one. I sprayed it on every day. I received and still receive compliments. I can still smell it many years later. Clay replaces the empty bottle each time. It is not just a memory. Many Blessings even for the little things, JudyTx

I lost 85% smell 15 years ago, especially food. Some days it's worse. Just crossed my mind about smelling smoke but not flowers, we could set them on fire, that would work, yeah ? ๐Ÿ˜

I also hear people and the radio plus I often smell petroleum and farm smells like manure, I mistakenly thought it might have been the wife's cooking in the early days, she reassures me in no uncertain terms it was not. ๐Ÿ˜

Last night we watched the Hobbit on tv with our grandkids. Every time Gandalf brought out his pipe to smoke, I smelled smoke. I guess I have a smellavision.
