What Do You Know About PD And Serotonin?
A MyParkinsonsTeam Member asked a question 💭

In a seminal research paper, published in Lancet Neurology, researchers from King's College London have used brain scans to uncover early changes in the brain that may happen years before the symptoms of Parkinson's appear.

The study looked at serotonin signalling in the brains of people with extremely rare genetic mutations that meant they had a very high risk of developing Parkinson's in the future.

They showed that changes in serotonin signalling may happen in the earliest stages of… read more

Hi Joni, Depression and anxiety are often listed as symptoms of PD. What I have read about the relationship is that frequently depression and anxiety follow the fact that there is no cure for PD and that PD can causse significant changes in our skills, memory, behaviors and this change may generate a cycle of grieving due to the 'loss' or unwanted and sometimes incontrolable changes in ourselves and our lives and the lives of our loved ones and caregivers. Much of this is based upon reported symptoms and the shared parts of the brain PD impacts.
Please let me know if you have more questions. This a new topic for me so I want r\to dig deeper. From my experience, I also lost my son and agree with you that that is very different issue but I do know that my symptoms were most definitely negatively by the degree of depression and anxiety I experienced. Conversely, as my depression and anxiety came under control, these same symptoms eased to the point that I was able to reduce my C-L dose.
Hope to hear more from you.

Les,
I laughed ( thank you ) thinking thank God we aren’t married. We would be bloody in the morning & our legs tangled up. Wake up thinking someone broke in & beat us up. 😂

Interesting research. I have had depression & anxiety most of my life. Someone must have broken my “Serotonin Maker” long ago.😆 I also got REM Sleep Behavior Disorder in my early to mid 50’s & was told I was high risk for Parkinson’s, Dementia, & Alzheimer’s. I was diagnosed with PD in 2018, but unknowingly had interior unseen symptoms for quite a few years before diagnosis. Doctors could never find what was causing what was going on inside me & my extreme exhaustion for years. It’s amazing that I told every doctor there was something wrong in my brain. Wala!!! Years later Parkinson’s. Antidepressants increasing serotonin never solved the problem for long. Also Parkinson’s increased both depression & anxiety for me. My Psych has me on higher than usual dosage of antidepressants & a Mood Stabilizer. Neuro has me on 2 Colazepam at night for the REM Sleep Behavior Disorder & Colazepam am & pm for anxiety.
Very interesting information indeed.
