Essential Oils?
A MyParkinsonsTeam Member asked a question đź’

As my Parkinson's has progressed it seems that more n more often now something hits the delete button in my head. I can't remember what I was doing, I can't remember what I was saying, and words just escape me.

My wife says that she has heard essential oils can help with memory loss.

Has anyone else heard of that?

Good morning all, I could not find and studies related to essential oils and memory loss. I'm sure no one is surprised. There are a lot of products that advertise that there essential oil products can help with this. A Japanese Co. named MTPA makes products they say help bring comfort and ease to PD patients.
My thoughts-It makes sense that essentials oils when applied to skin and massaged into the person could ease pain and stiffness often suffered by folks with PD. I would try it for skin application or inhalation for relaxation but do not ingest and be sure the oil will not interact after absorption into your body with medications you are taking.

Please check out more common causes for memory loss like poor sleep, medication side effect or interaction, poor nutrition, lack of exercise, stress, anxiety and depression to name a few. Also, please be sure to talk to your care team before adding over the counter (OTC) products to your treatment plan. Some of these products can interfere with your medication making it more or less effective.

It is totally your decision but I suggest before spending money on products with unknown effect, please talk to your doctor about your symptoms and current care plan and try to improve your daily activities to improve nutrition, exercise and reduce stress, anxiety, depression. and other factors that can impact memory.

Keep in mind- there is no silver bullet but there is no harm in taking safe measures to improve your day but: talk to your care team; look for studies not advertising that show you the results of OTC's and potential harm due to interaction with your meds; try safe life changes that can help improve your memory.

This may not be the info you were looking for but I tell you this because I want you to see improvement safely by improving your habits and life. This approach costs very little and can improve your overall health as well as your brain. I say this because you lived it and because I want you to live the best life you can safely. If you find comfort and ease and therefore better sleep and less stress and anxiety through use of the essential oils and it has no harmful side effects (even though it is not ingested) go for it but do it safely and thoughtfully please.
