If you see a grey figure on the right top corner and it has a tick the person is on your team. If you click on it you can remove someone. If it has a plus sign and you touch it you will add the person.

The @ sign makes sure that you will see the message so it doesn't get lost in all the other messages. It is a way of directing an answer at a specific person rather than just the general forum.

To answer your original question, you can set up your account so that you automatically add anyone who adds you to their team. Or just click on their photo to change the plus sign to a check mark. That does it too.
