How Does Someone With Parkinson's Know The Difference Between Forgetting Things As A Senior Or Early-stage Dementia?
A MyParkinsonsTeam Member asked a question 💭

Since being diagnosed with Parkinson's, I do fear that dementia. I'm beginning to think that forgetting where I put my ink pen is a natural part of aging. I don't forget that the appliance I'm cooking on is a stove. So, when do I start worrying? I live with my husband of 46 years and my sister-in-law who lives next door ( who look at each other when I say that I can't find my ink pen ) with a look of concern. I'm becoming more concerned with my sister-in-law, who forgets that she said she would… read more

Hi, this is a really important question. My mother had Alzheimer’s and I have been watching myself for any signs of that. Your posts are very informative and well written. I am no doctor but I think you are a long way from dementia.
One positive step I have taken is to learn Spanish. There is quite a body of research that language learning as we age can delay the onset of dementia. Anything we can do to keep our brains busy and challenged is good I think.

Good morning.
I noticed David declining last year and mentioned it to his neurologist. They gave him a test which he did rather poorly on. He started on a medication for cognition donzepil 5 mg which seemed to help but gave some GI issues. When they increased it to 10 MG the GI issues were too much so he is now on a patch that doesn’t go through the GI system. It’s very difficult to know for sure how much it is helping because David doesn’t interact very much.
My Dad and his sister Aunt Fay both had Alzheimer’s. I try to read a lot and do what I can to stay alert. They say Alzheimer’s is type 3 diabetes so I try to keep my blood sugar within reasonable limits.
Blessings,
Trena

I am so sorry about David. It must be tough for you to deal with David and worry about yourself. I agree with Phil794 that it is good to challenge yourself to do something you've never done before and learn something that taxes your mind. I'm glad there was a patch to change to. Do you have a nurse come to help you with David? My insurance is good enough to offer help for a speech therapist or someone or whatever I need. I would think that you might be able to have someone come in to improve David's cognitive behavior. That's just a thought. I will continue to be around people to keep my social skills up. I want to continue to play mental games on the computer.
I pray for God to give you the strength to care for David while taking care of yourself. Keep working in that garden.
Bless you.
