PD diagnosed just 3 years ago. I'm real overweight! Have some shaking of my left foot and hand when at rest or socially over stimulated. Am on Carbidopa/Levodopa and Ropinirole.

I had a lap band and I have PD. I lost a lot of weight and don't regret it.

Thanks so much Glenn for sharing your story. Makes me feel not so alone. Gives me hope that this is the right thing for me to do. I don't want to get much above the 284 pounds that I am right now! Thanks again and God Bless your journey.

Cathy,

I had the Roux En Y gastric bypass in 2011. I was 49 years old and not diagnosed with PD at the time. I am 6 2", and was 185 pounds in 1986 when I was married. In 2011 I topped off at 361 with many health conditions such as severe sleep apnea, out of control diabetes two, high cholesterol, high blood pressure and asthma. A year later, I was 240 pounds, resolved sleep apnea, normal cholesterol, normal sugar levels (without medication), normal blood pressure and improved asthma (without inhalers). Today at age 62, after some ups and downs I am maintaining approximately 230 to 240 pounds. I have been on the Keto diet for about two years now combined with regular frequent exercise which is keeping my weight relatively stable.

Most Importantly you need to speak with your treating PD physician, family doctor and the surgeon that would be doing the surgery. As Crystal mentioned, your PD physician needs to know about the surgery as this procedure changes the way all your meds metabolize so your physician will adjust for this.

I was diagnosed with PD in 2017 after a few years of misdiagnosis as Essential Tremors. I couldn't imagine living with PD and be obese as in the past. I need to exercise often such as kick boxing, yoga, stationary biking, swimming and general working out on gym machines. When I was overweight, exercise was so difficult. Additionally, the comorbid diseases that were caused by my obesity would have made things more difficult to get through a day with PD and shortened my life.

That being said as long as all of your physicians agree with you proceeding with the procedure, I would highly recommend it as it was the only way I could have been able to manage my weight at a healthier level.

Please let me know if you have any questions and good luck!!

Glenn

I was diagnosed 2021 decided to have the gastric sleeve in 2022 spoke with my neurologist and PC physician before hand neither one was against it…. I had read on another site that people were concerned with the extended release meds, but my MDS told me that C/L ER is released through our blood not our stomach and he also was not against the sleeve surgery. My highest weight was 235 at 5’4” after being diagnosed I went to Clean eating and started yoga and meeting with a health coach and I got down to 205. I just couldn’t lose any more, and I knew I could not exercise vigorously like I would have to to get it off. So my lowest weight was 162 but I’m 2 years out and I’m up to 175 still happy with my decision and as a plus I was off of my high blood pressure meds within 3 months!!
