What's a good beginner punching bag workout routine for Parkinson's disease?

Boxing is an excellent exercise option for people with Parkinson's because it combines aerobic activity, strength training, balance work, and flexibility training all in one. Boxing classes designed specifically for people with PD are becoming more popular across the country.

Before starting any new exercise routine, check with your physician first, especially if you're not accustomed to exercising. Once you get clearance, aim to exercise three times per week.

Here are some tips for getting started:

- Warm up before exercising and stretch afterward
- Keep a chair or stable item nearby for support if needed
- Stay hydrated to help combat muscle soreness
- Start slowly and work your way up - it's normal to feel some muscle soreness after exercise
- Listen to your body and pace yourself for consistency

The key is finding exercises you enjoy so you stay motivated. As one MyParkinsonsTeam member advised, "Pace yourself ... the key is consistency." Another member shared: "If you do too much and are exhausted or in pain, the next day, rest. Usually exercise should give energy, not destroy it."

Consider working with a coach or program that specializes in Parkinson's exercise to ensure the routine is tailored to your specific needs and abilities.

Speed bag or heavy bag? At my husband's Rock Steady Boxing class, they do various drills on both. With the heavy bag, the idea is to mix jab/cross, left and right hooks, and upper-cuts. With the speed bag, the point is to develop a good rhythm.
