I went to get out of my recliner last night like I've done thousands of times before and suddenly I didn't have the strength to push myself up and was trapped for about two hours before anyone Heard my cries for help, this was around 2am and my strength still isn't back. Has this happened to you?

I have trouble getting up from sitting sometimes but it has never been prolonged like your describing. I do sitting to standing exercises every morning to strengthen my legs but I don't think that would help what your describing.
I would talk to my neurologist if I were you. I hope you get some answers. Let us know. God's blessings.Nanna Howlett

Has sudden loss of strength happened to others with Parkinson's?

Yes, sudden weakness and difficulty getting up from chairs is something other MyParkinsonsTeam members have experienced. This can be particularly frightening when it happens unexpectedly.

What you're describing could be related to "off" periods in Parkinson's, when medication effectiveness wears off. During these times, people report:

- Extreme fatigue and low energy
- Difficulty moving or feeling like they "can't move"
- Muscle stiffness
- Loss of strength in specific areas

One member shared: "When my medicine wears off, I can't move." Another described experiencing "low to no energy" and "muscle stiffness" during off periods.

What you should do:

Contact your doctor right away about this episode. This is important because:

- They can review your medication timing and dosages
- Sudden weakness could indicate your medications need adjustment
- They can assess whether this is related to off periods or another issue
- They may refer you to physical or occupational therapy to help with getting up from chairs safely

In the meantime, don't try to get up alone if you're feeling weak. Having someone nearby or a way to call for help quickly is important for your safety.

Russell, this happened to me last night in a restaurant. My husband had to pull me up from the chair. I was so stiff I couldn't help myself.
