Vomiting from carbidopa/levodopa is a real and frustrating problem — and you're definitely not alone in experiencing it. The good news is that there are alternative ways to get the medication into your body that completely bypass swallowing pills altogether. Here are some delivery options worth discussing with your doctor:
- Inhaled levodopa (Inbrija) — A powder you breathe in, which works quickly and skips the stomach entirely
- Intestinal gel infusion (Duopa) — Delivered directly into the small intestine through a small pump, surgically placed near the belly button
- Under-the-skin infusion (Onapgo or Vyalev) — Continuous medication delivery through a device worn on the body There are also add-on medications like rasagiline (Azilect) or apomorphine (Apokyn) that your doctor might consider to help manage symptoms alongside or instead of oral levodopa.
It's really important to bring this up with your neurologist as soon as possible so they can find an approach that works for your body. Nobody should have to choose between vomiting and managing their symptoms!
