Yes, this is something others with Parkinson's experience too! Post-meal balance and mobility issues can happen for a few reasons related to Parkinson's.
One key factor is how food — especially protein — interacts with levodopa. Protein competes with levodopa for absorption, which can reduce how well the medication works and lead to more "off" time after eating.
Slow gut movement, which Parkinson's can cause, may also delay medication absorption and worsen motor symptoms after meals. Here are some strategies that may help:
- Take levodopa on an empty stomach when possible, or time it carefully around meals
- Avoid high-protein meals close to your medication dose
- Spread protein intake to later in the day if mornings are more active for you
- Eat smaller, more frequent meals to reduce the post-meal "slump"
- Talk to a registered dietitian who can help plan meals around your medication schedule
A MyParkinsonsTeam member shared that eating homemade soups, sitting up straight, and taking time while chewing made a real difference — especially for those also dealing with swallowing concerns.
It's worth bringing this up with your neurologist or care team, as adjusting your medication timing or dosage around meals could make a noticeable difference.
