Great question! Balance exercises are one of the most important things to focus on with Parkinson's. The good news is there are plenty of options, and finding ones you enjoy makes it much easier to stick with them.

Research shows that the most effective programs combine intentional movement with mental focus. Here are some exercises and activities that can help improve balance:

- Tai chi — slow, flowing movements that also have a meditative quality
- Yoga — promotes flexibility and balance through mind-body connection
- Qigong — combines posture, movement, breathing, and meditation
- Dance — fun and combines aerobic activity, strength, and balance
- Walking — simple and effective, especially to a steady beat or music
- Treadmill training — shown in studies to improve motor symptoms and mobility There are also simple exercises you can practice at home:

- Sit-to-stand — repeatedly sit and stand from a chair, with a sturdy surface nearby for support
- Side-to-side stepping — practice next to a table with someone nearby for safety
- Penguin waddle — shift weight side to side, lifting alternate feet, like a slow pendulum

As one MyParkinsonsTeam member put it about tai chi: "My balance is still excellent. In my opinion, tai chi is great for balance and meditative activity, and I wouldn't give it up for anything." A few everyday movement tips can also help reduce falls:

- Swing both arms while walking
- Lift feet intentionally, imagining stepping over a line
- Use a curved "U-turn" path instead of pivoting suddenly
- Focus on one task at a time while moving
- Count to 15 between position changes (like sitting to standing)

Working with a physical therapist is also worth considering — they can tailor exercises specifically to your needs and stage. Always check with your doctor before starting anything new!
