My neurologist initially wanted me to go with the subcutaneous pump, but I wanted to try the patch first. I'm 73 and am concerned about side effects for a geriatric patient. Thanks for your input!

Hi Shannon 👋
I had the Neuro patch
along with the parkinson medication and to be honest with you I put it on every morning it goes from 2mg to 8mg and it did nothing for me at all I tried it for months
Then I got a brain wave myself and weened myself of it under the Doctor's supervision and went and bought myself Nicotine Patches and used them and they did the job believe me you ask half the people on this site about Nicotine Patches and they will tell you.Now there is one thing you have to do is to talk to your doctor first and see what he says because there is not One person on this site qualified to tell you to do this
Shannon go and Google
Doctor Brian Adris and he will tell you all about Nicotine patches and what milligrams you should have because you can cut the patches into size
I use for pain now do your research
and remember you must talk to you Neurologist.that put on the Neuro patch first before you do anything he has to OK it first
Let us know how you get on!!
All the best

Trying the Neupro patch when oral medications aren't staying down makes a lot of sense — it bypasses the digestive system entirely, delivering medication directly through the skin. It's a reasonable step before moving to a subcutaneous pump.

Trying the Neupro patch when oral medications aren't staying down makes a lot of sense — it bypasses the digestive system entirely, delivering medication directly through the skin. It's a reasonable step before moving to a subcutaneous pump.

Here are the common side effects to be aware of with Neupro:

- Nausea and vomiting
- Drowsiness or dizziness
- Reduced appetite
- Increased sweating
- Insomnia
- Swelling
- Abnormal movements
- Skin reactions at the application site There are also some more serious side effects to watch for and report to your doctor immediately:

- Fast, pounding, or uneven heartbeat
- Rigid muscles or muscle cramps
- Fever or chest pain
- Hallucinations or agitation
- Impulsive behavior
- Slurred speech or seizures

At 73, drowsiness and dizziness are worth paying particular attention to, as they can increase fall risk — something especially important to discuss with your neurologist. A few important practical tips for using the patch safely:

- Only apply to clean, dry, healthy skin — never irritated or oily skin
- Avoid heat sources like heating pads, saunas, or direct sunlight on the patch
- Remove the patch before any MRI or cardioversion procedure (it contains aluminum)
- Don't stop using it suddenly — taper off gradually with your doctor's guidance
- Avoid alcohol, as it can intensify side effects

Your neurologist knows your full history, so keeping them closely informed as you adjust to the patch is really the best path forward. Good luck with the transition!

The pump was a disaster for me, I got an infection from it and a side effect of neuropathy so I’m back on the Rytary
