I keep reading posts about movement disorder specialists. How are they different from physical therapists and where do you find them? I would like to do all i can to continue being as active as i can. I live in a small town, but I would drive the 100+ miles if they could help my PD from progressing.
Hi @A MyParkinsonsTeam Member
I found that it is extremely important to keep depression & anxiety & apathy under control especially with PD.. For myself I use Effexor XL 100mg x1 for depression, and Buspar 15mg x3 for anxiety.... Initially also took Wellbutrin XL 150mg x1 for my cocktail to treat just this part.... for close to 30 years... These are the most gentle, lowest side effect meds available, with a long history of safe use....
I take care of getting these meds from my PCP / Family Doctor.... I have had NO problems with interactions of the PD meds. Typically the Neurologist doesn't really want to get involved with prescribing anxiety & depression meds.... Alan

I would suggest that you consider finding another Neurologist that can be more proactive in the treatment of your husband.... I'm a believer in Sinemet 25/100 used in conjunction with [[treatment:Comtan:55d5378a6bcd618dd[[phone:1000869]] 200:]] that allows the Sinemet to work longer...
My Specialist believes in aggressive treatment to obtain best quality of Life for me. For myself I take 12 Sinemet 25/100 & 4 [[treatment:Comtan:55d5378a6bcd618dd[[phone:1000869]] 200:]] with excellent results in minimizing PD symptoms with my Stage 3 PD....
By doing this it provides me with a Therapeutic Level of meds in my system, so I don't have issue with off times, or problems if I miss taking my dosage.... He also says several of his patient take +30 tabs of Sinemet 25/100 with excellent results.... How this help you consider a 2nd opinion.... Alan
Yes! I too would love to add you to my team. I understand exactly how you feel. Some days I feel pretty normal except for tremors. So it's hard for me to comprehend that I have this disease. Just live a day at a time & enjoy the time God has given us. Hopefully I can help others through my own personal journey with Parkinsons. Regardless of what may happen I am blessed and thankful for everything & everyone in my life!
I am lucky, my neurologist is also a movement disorder specialist so I am fortunate to have both options available to me. This may be something to consider for you. In the mean time, exercise, exercise, exercise. Bike riding, spinning (if you have a gym available to you, running, walking. Tai Chi is also a good to take up if available in your area. I it very good for your balance. Keep moving around the your house...don't stay sitting for more than 30 minutes.
Our neurologist is a MDS and is only 1 of 2 in the state. He spends at least 30 minutes with us and even calls us if he has a question rather than have his nurse do it.He referred Billy for physical therapy so he has that through home health 2 x a week and it really helps.
