For Those With Young Onset PD, How Long Did You Work After Your Diagnosis? If You Still Work, How Are You Managing It?
A MyParkinsonsTeam Member asked a question 💭

If you have young onset pd and were working how long have you been able to continue working? Have there been changes in your abilities? How have you maneuvered this facet of balancing your life with your diagnosis?

I was diagnosed a year ago at 37, I am still working as a preschool teacher. My symptoms are mild and with meds are hardly noticeable. They do not interfere except tremor gets bad if things get too stressful. I am hoping for things to stay this way for many years!

I was diagnosed at the age of almost 41, over 13 years ago. I am still working full time as a secretary since my symptoms have been reasonably mild, no one can tell unless I tell them, but within the last 6 months or so the tremors have become more noticeable (I used to be able to control them) and my gait is going off balance more and more.

ElizabethManleyCalavano. I also did home health nursing for a number of years so I can certainly relate. I certainly understand your situation. Actually I am amazed that you are able to work. Your stress level with your PD, working, and your husband's medical problem certainly cannot be helping. I know that as a nurse you already know these things. I think a lot of us are waiting until after the election to make decisions about a lot of things. Please post when you can. I will pray for your situation as I do for everyone.

diagnosed at 46-soon turning 48.i am still working as a home care nurse but find the long hours an excessive driving difficult.have spoken to my bosses as i am the only nurse covering 2 counties and have asked to be pulled from one or to have another nurse assigned to help me.I have worked for this company for 11 years-22 yrs total inhome care and bosses have not been very cooperative.last I was told was "maybe in a year" they will give me help.i have looked into changing who I work for but every change is a financial loss-either hourly wage or cost of health care and as my husband has been disabled for 2 yrs and still waiting for back surgery I don't have a lot of options.only upside is lots of overtime and mileage payments and everything extra I am saving for when I can no longer work to offset the 2 1/2 yr wait time from disability approval to medicare coverage.have considered work from home but there hasn't been many options for this in the past.will try to hang at this job for one more year and see how it goes.have had increased symptoms and falls at times when fatigued.with the change in healthcare there are more options for work at home with insurance companies but with the election and current health care law imploding in on itself I am waiting to see what will happen.unfortunately our new director at my agency is a nurse on paper with a business background-she has never worked in the real nursing world and has no idea what our job entails which is why I get very little support.
