Addiction To Levodopa
A MyParkinsonsTeam Member asked a question 💭

I'm wondering, if Levodopa is causing dependency and problems in autonomic nervous system. I should take Levodopa every 3 hours, but I feel so bad that I take the medication abt, 2,5 hrs few times a day (I have Levodopa 125 mg x 2 times a day

yes, when i go "off" after 3 1/ 2 hrs even using Rytary i feel lousy with fatigue, dark mood, shortness of breath, mild nausea with what feels like slow gastric emptying, dfifficulty emptying my bladder later followed urinary frequency, mental fogginess and difficulty moving. it can take three hours after levodopa taken just as i go off before i go on again. i try hard not to go off by having pill alarms that remind me to take meds so i don't let an extra half hour go by without covering myself. it's so much harder to get back "on" than it is to prevent going"off" in the first place. Not long before my DBS surgery i had one neurologist tell me i was behaving like i was addicted to dopamine only to be told a month later by my movement disorders neurologist, that i was clearly undermedicated and needed to increase the dose to prevent going off.and getting so stiff. I felt so humiliated when the one doctor told me i was a dopamine addict - i had no prior history of addiction tendency, no punding activity. i get leary of doctors taking care of me who don't see a lot of Parkinsons

Sad but true. I have tried going off them b/c I hate being dependent on so many drugs but I feel so bad after a few days I always go back. Not sure which is making me feel worse the PD or the withdrawal from the drugs

Hello Lynnmorgan lf it is levadopa your taking ie, Madopar or Sinemet there is two other drugs that can make it last longer therefore improve the effectiveness of it. They are called Stavelo and Entacapone I use Madopar and Entacapone well worth it and Entacapone does not get less effective as time where's on on averege you may get 6 hrs out of one dosage worth investigating??

I'm taking 6 tablets of Stalevo per day and Sifrol 2 tabs per day and 1 tab Azilect + bloodpressure tabs.
I had pneumonia in June and I feel waring off 6 times per day. I feel myself as zombie. It is very unpleasant.

Yes I take 200mg tabs. Sipposed to take 5 a day. One every 3hours but I cannot go that long as I can feel it wearing off. I take it every 2 hours. I also take it through the night as I cannot sleep. I end up taking about 9 or 10 a day. Doctor says that I am addicted y it now. And that eventually it will stop working altogether.
