I am trying to make a decision whether I want to do it or not. One doctor says it will help and another says it won't help me. Does anybody out there had the surgery, and if you had it, would you do it again?
I have two deep brain stiimulators. One on each side.. The first one in 2000 and the 2nd in 2003. All ; of that uncontrolled movement gone plus I lost my Parkinson's mask. The only thing it cannot do is fix my balance. I was originally diagnosed in 1993 at age 37. I had a great surgeon whom I stiil see approiximately every 3 to 5 years to have the battery replaced. I would recommend him to anyone looking.for a great surgeon and a very kind Dr,
I am allergic to my medication I get side effects, so last July Ihad dbs surgery ,all went well and they tested it in theater and the feeling of relaxation was great a ( I suffer from tight muscles ) Every time I was tuned in I felt better, but in August the battery itself was trying to push out and didnt look well. I went back to the Walton in Liverpool where I had surgery and put on a antibiotic drip but it didnt get better so I had to remove battery and coil joining them.I was in for 6 weeks. Then 3 weeks before Chrismas my head scar was weeping so Walton again . and had electrodes and other wire removed!! My parki is worsening and im suppose to try again,
Yesterday had phone call Walton asking could I come on 28th to have pre opp .. I ve been this morning and going in Tuesday to try again and this time no infection please !!
parki is different in all of us so what works for you wouldnt for me, the little time I had it switched on felt better and its your decision to make. let me know what youve done and if it does not work they can allways remove it.
I had DBS a year ago. My tremor is gone most of the time but it did mess up my speech. The operation was easy with no pain. I'd do it again.
I also had dbs done a little less than two years and had similar experience as Jane. I didn't have tremors but had freezing issues. I am thrilled with the results and would do it again in a heartbeat.
I had DBS almost 2 years ago and would do it again. My tremor has lessened to the point of my meds have been cut in half. Some doctors have the patients stay awake during surgery. My neurosurgeon said by using the MRI as a map, he can get within one mm of where he would be by having the patients be awake. Works for me. Also, I had zero pain with the procedure. Met with a neuropsychiatrist and was giving an in depth evaluation and test to determine my cognitive status. Having a competent neurologist is of utmost importance. Let me know if you have any other questions.
