The television news has been showing this as the new wonder treatment for Parkinson's. They've been showing benefits from stationary bikes to the motorized sit on your recliner and let the machine move your legs (or even arms).
My husband is an everyday cyclist and he says 70-90 RPM is pretty tough. So my thought is to ease into it. We do know that exercise is the only evidenced based therapy to slow or stop progression. Cycling has proven to help many, many PwP. I participated in a clinical study at USC ; the researcher suggested that riding a tandem with my husband where he randomly tells me to pick up the pace may well be beneficial. Whatever we choose, let's exercise!!!
I rode my bike across Iowa as part of RAGBRAI four times. I rode with a group called Pedaling for Parkinson's started by Dr Jay Albert of the Cleveland clinic. He is the one who discovered this and has been studying it. He discovered that as long as you are connected to the pedals and your feet move at that pace you get the benefits. There is a motorized stationary bike that you can sit on and it pedals for you. You can also ride on a tandem bike with someone else doing the work.
I was told yesterday by a friend that he saw this on the news and said I should try it. It does work they say
I have joined a gym. I cycle and use the tread mill. I am also doing some strength training. I feel good after the work out. I have not cycled for 60 to 90 mins, l do 15 min. I am walking a lot better and can relax easier.
I'm gonna try it!!!! Got absolutely nothing to lose!
