I,ve had this surgery too. It is useful. You can get rid of dementia, urnary incontinence too.

Normal pressure hydrocephalus involves a block in the pathway traveled by the cerebrospinal fluid [CSF]. There are four ventricles filled with cerebrospinal fluid which help cushion the brain as you move and they are connected by relatively small passageways. There are two lateral ventricles deep in each cerebral hemisphere which connect with the midline 3rd and 4th ventricles located along the brain stem.CSF forms in the lateral ventricles and slowly flows down through the third and fourth ventricles.from there it travels up around the ventricles to be absorbed into a big vein running along the length of the head - the sagittal sinus [sinus meaning vein]. The fluid travels beneath the middle of the three layers of the meninges, the membrane which covers the brain. if the subarachnoid space is blocked [perhaps by prior trauma or infection] the CSF doesn't flow like it should and the lateral ventricles get big.[ easily seen on CT scan]. these big ventricles put pressure on the adjacent brain tissue. Classic symptoms include wide-based unsteady gait, dementia and urinary incontinence. if you stick a shunt [plastic tube] in one of the lateral ventricles and drain the fluid to the heart or peritoneal cavity of the abdomen, the pressure is released in the lateral ventricles and symptoms can improve depending on how long they were present.
