My husband who has PD has been coughing a lot when he is eating of late. Then a couple of days ago he got food stuck and couldn't breathe and I had to actually do the Abdominal Thrust procedure which did actually work (thank God) and the food came out.
Just wondered if these occurrences could be connected to his PD??? I'm starting to get paranoid every time I leave him alone in case he eats something and has a problem.
Any advice would be welcomed. Thanks in advance 😊
I have had problems with swallowing, in fact I even had a minor case of aspirational pneumonia. Not to scare you but it is one of the highest causes of death in PD. There are many things that you can do for it. First tell your Neurologist, have a swallow test done, and then get a referral to a speech therapist. Speech therapy is great, it helps us speak louder and does much to help swallowing issues.
If you tell him to put his chin down towards his chest at the point of swallowing this will reduce the amount of choking and will give you both a bit more confidence when eating hopefully it will help you, it did me. Regards Gavin Tomlinson
a very serious issue!!! Suggest he take swallowing therapy. YouTube has quite a bit of information/demonstrations. on swallowing, as well as the LSVT BIG and LOUD.
I don't have problems with choking with food going down, but have problems with food just sliding down prior to completion of chewing. Sometime I nudge it back up and complete the process, and sometimes I just swallow.
Hello Elspeth, just wanted to say what a great job you did with actually saving your husband it must have been so scary you are very brave. My husband was diagnosed with PD in 2014 he has problems with coughing not so much choking but sometimes get food caught though. With his coughing he will realize that he's forgotten to take his meds and this is when it starts for him. So I asked him and he says the coughing is related to his PD. Sending you a hug and a big pat on the back.
