Any Advice About Long Term Disability
A MyParkinsonsTeam Member asked a question 💭

I was thinking to apply for LTD, but my doctor says that I am not ready yet, I was diagnosed 5 years ago and my tremors are somehow controlled by my meds. The problem is that I can notice my speed to work on the computer has decreased so much. My fear is being fired and to lose my LTD insurance. So who determines when you are ready and it is not too late for this benefit?.
Thanks

Social Security disability could be the way to go. Benefits are based on payments you would receive at your normal retirement regardless of your age. You should check what requirements they have to make you " eligible". As a PD patient I cannot imagine working.. Some days I feel 'normal' and other days I can hardly get out of bed. Good luck. I agree with @A MyParkinsonsTeam Member about telling your doctor in "detail" what is causing you to be less productive at work. To be honest, I'm a little taken back that your doctor isn't supportive. I would be firm with your doctor and explain everything that limits your work performance and how it effects your health. Is this doctor a neurologist? My brother's neurologist nearly begged my brother to retire. I don't know much about LTD, although my company offers it to their employees. We have online policies explaining it. Do you have a company policy or Human Resource department to get information? I do know a lot about Social Security Disability. Have you thought about seeing another doctor? That might be the least costly route. Or, try searching LTD through Google and see what suggestions are offered. Please keep me posted. Good Luck!

@A MyParkinsonsTeam Member. Sorry you are having increased difficulties at work. I had the same thing, but I have a chronic illness other than PD (my Dad has PD). Anyway, I went straight to an attorney when I knew I couldn't do my job with the same vigor and accuracy. I was so weak and ill. It is a process, so I'd get the ball rolling now. Have you tried giving your doc clear examples and expressing your concerns to him/her? Your doctor doesn't seem to quite 'get it'! I wouldn't ask your doctor. I'd tell your doctor, look I can't do my job anymore and it is a serious issue! I hope your doc gets on the same page and I wish you the best of luck. I'd pursue the LTD with an attorney now though...at least a consult! Best wishes, Tedi
